You may have heard of reiki or associate it with some new age fad, but the practice of reiki is anything but new. Started in Japan in the 1920s, reiki is the practice of energy healing. It comes from the words "rei" – meaning, universal or higher power – and "ki" –life force energy. Reiki is a complementary health approach, in which practitioners like me use their hands to channel energy to the client and bolter energy fields that support overall health and vitality. Practitioners work to remove energy blocks that impede flow, causing not only health problems but negative circumstances, such as relationship or financial problems. Reiki is meant to complement - not replace - traditional medicine, including doctor visits, surgery, therapy, and prescription medicine.
I became very interested in alternative healing after contracting H1N1 (Swine Flu) in 2009. I was what is now considered a long hauler with that virus and experienced a variety of health issues for years after. I personally have had fantastic results from many alternative methods, including reiki. The experience led me to write a novel called “Rise” about a healer, and in that process, I researched and interviewed several reiki practitioners. I was introduced to my reiki teacher in 2019 and she invited me to train in the practice. Over the last two years, I acquired the necessary training and I started working with clients regularly this year.
Reiki is non-evasive, so side effects are very low. Some clients feel tingling sensations, pressure, or hot/cold, while others feel nothing during treatment. Some clients note feeling a little tired or sleepy after a session, others feel bursts of energy. As for how you will respond to treatment, it truly depends on the person. In studies over the years, reiki has been attributed to reduction in pain, improvement in sleep, lower rates of anxiety, depression, increased energy, and an overall feeling of well-being. My clients have noted all those benefits, as well as increased clarity and even general improvement in various areas of their lives, including finances, job performance, and relationships. Proof that when we change our energy and feel better, our lives improve overall.
The client typically wears comfortable clothes for a session. It can take place on a massage table, in a chair (if that’s more comfortable for the client), in an outdoor setting or a quiet place of nature, or even remotely via video call. Length of the session is anywhere from 50 to 90 minutes, depending on if it’s a specific issue, or an overall energy clearing and attunement. Before a session begins, I ask the client if there are any specific areas to address. I set the intention for the session, get the client to relax with deep breaths, then I use my hands to channel the energy. Throughout the session, I am sensing energy blocks and working to remove them for the client, replacing with positive energies for the client’s highest good. The client can keep eyes closed or open, as long they remain comfortable and relaxed. After the session is over, we typically discuss anything that came up during the session, answer questions, and then I give instructions on what to do to keep the energy balanced moving forward.
If you are in the Portland Metro Area, we can safely meet in person. I work with clients remotely as well via Zoom. Either method will bring you the desired results.
As mentioned, several studies have been done as to the benefits of reiki, and like other practices such as acupuncture, yoga, and meditation, its roots are in the spiritual. However, reiki is not a religion or a specific spiritual belief. The health approach is used to create greater ease in the body, be it physical, emotional, or mental. It should be noted that many prominent health centers around the country now offer reiki, which speaks to its growing demand.
